What's StuTS?
Student Conference on Linguistics
StuTS stands for Studentische Tagung Sprachwissenschaft, Student Conference on Linguistics.
The conference takes place once per semester and is organized independently by students. We will be hosting this semester's 80th StuTS during the 2026–27 winter semester (18–22 November) at the University of Cologne.
Exchanging Knowledge
The conference aims to promote exchange among different fields of linguistics. In addition, students will have the opportunity to present their own research and findings in various formats, such as seminar papers or theses. In addition to the student presentations, there will also be several keynote addresses by professors and instructors from our university.

What's the deal with the mascot?
Have you ever wondered why our mascot is a Parrot? Parrots are actually just as much a part of Cologne as Carnival, Kölsch, and Queerness!
But why?
Free roses and rings
There are actually about 3,000 rose-ringed parakeets and Alexandrine parakeets living in Cologne. And no, not in cages as pets, but out in the wild! They’ve long since become our feathered neighbors, and if you're lucky, you might see or hear them in the evening near their roosting trees, right by the Deutz Bridge on the left bank of the Rhine. These colorful birds are a perfect fit for the Cologne way of life.
Bird poop on the wall brings good luck
But it's not just real parakeets that have taken over the city, they've also left their mark in another way: Mysterious graffiti featuring portraits of these little birds keeps popping up all over the city. It’s a shame that so many homeowners fail to appreciate the value of these works of art. That’s why you have to be lucky to spot one here, too. :)
Ornitholinguistics
And, of course, these little birds are also a symbol of linguistics in Cologne! Rose-ringed parakeets can learn up to 250 human words, although they usually do so in captivity. But the variety of their own communication sounds is also remarkable.
